This guide is composed to provide you with a comprehensive overview of porcelain veneers and details of the procedure. Covered below:
Veneers, in general, are used extensively in cosmetic dentistry. They are small tooth-colored chips that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to either improve the color or alignment. They can be made of resin or porcelain, the latter of which is more commonly used in practice.
Getting veneers is a low-invasive and relatively quick procedure and can be completed in 2-3 sittings.
Veneers can improve a range of superficial and aesthetic concerns with the teeth like chipped or broken teeth, discoloration, misalignment, gaps in the teeth, etc.
They are also extremely useful in giving you a brighter and symmetrical smile.
Veneers are meant to be permanent, and thus, your dentist will take great care in ensuring that you get the specifications that are most perfect for your teeth.
Veneers can help you get an improved and confident smile – they are a useful investment with long last returns on dental treatments.
Types of teeth veneers
There are primarily two kinds of veneers: porcelain-based, and composite veneers. There are some key differences between the two:
Porcelain veneers: these are wafer-thin, stain-resistant, and give complete coverage. The application process does not require the dentist to remove any enamel from either side of the tooth to cap on the porcelain chip. Since the chip is ultra-thin, it can be attached to the tooth without any modification to the sensitive tooth tissue.
The veneer is completely opaque, and so can be prepared in a shade customized to give the patient the best smile possible.
Resin-based composite veneers: these chips are similar to the porcelain kind, but do not have the same level of durability. They are more prone to staining and chipping over time.
For more information, you should go through a useful comparison between porcelain and traditional veneers here.
Like we mentioned earlier, the whole procedure requires 2-3 sittings right from the consultation until the end.
When you come in for your first consultation visit, your dentists and cosmetologists will carry out a full inspection of your dental specifications, take note of your desired end-product. Your dentist will then take impressions of your teeth and help you select the ideal type of veneers (lumineers).
There are various factors that need to be considered while choosing your veneers:
Additional factors that you must let your dentist know are about decisions that can modify your appearance – for example, if your planning to get lip or cheek fillers. These can change the shape and tone of your face – and affect the choice of teeth veneers for you.
Once the choice is made, the impressions are sent to a specialized dental laboratory to custom-make theporcelain chips for your teeth. Each client receives a tailor-made set of veneers to ensure that they are a perfect match for you.
Once the porcelain veneers are prepared at the lab, the client can return to the clinic for the application process. The fitting is a non-invasive process and does not require any local anesthetic to be administered.
The dentist will prep your teeth for the chips, and then permanently bond them to your teeth. It is quick and pain-free.
This is an optional visit to the dentist after 7-10 days following the fitting of the Lumineers. This is to ensure that the bond of the veneers on the teeth is solid, and that there is no discomfort.
In just a few days after the procedure, you should be able to completely return to your regular eating and drinking habits. Since any procedure involving teeth is a delicate matter, your dentist will give you a set of precautions and instructions to take the best care possible of your teeth.
