Picture this. You look into the mirror one day and flash your happiest smile. But what you see isn’t a pleasant sight. You can see through your teeth. Well, even if they aren’t completely see-through yet, you are worried to see translucent edges at the bottom of your teeth.
That doesn’t look pretty. Not normal. And, of course, a sign of concern. Before you panic more, here’s all that you need to know about why your teeth look transparent.
We have also outlined the steps that you can take to prevent further damage and cover the damage that’s already been done.
Enamel is the outer protective layer that covers the teeth. That’s what gives teeth an opaque look. When the enamel is damaged, the teeth appear thin and clear.
In the beginning, only the edges of your teeth, from where you bite, appear translucent. But as the problem progresses, the entire teeth can become see-through or transparent.
Transparent teeth are just one of the signs of enamel loss. When left without the protection that enamel offers, your teeth can suffer extreme damage.
The causes of this non-reversible enamel loss include –
Enamel Hypoplasia
Enamel Hypoplasia is a condition in which the production of healthy enamel is limited. This makes the enamel abnormally think. Sometimes even non-existent. Even if the enamel is formed, it has grooves, pits, and white spots. Those with Enamel Hypoplasia are at a high risk of see-through teeth because their enamel is already weak.
Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions expose the teeth to highly corrosive stomach acids. This makes the enamel wither away, and teeth appear transparent or see-through. Such medical conditions include bulimia, frequent vomiting, morning sickness, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and heartburn. Celiac disease also negatively impacts the production of healthy enamel. It also increases the possibility of see-through teeth.
Acidic Diet
Food and beverages with a high acidic content erode your enamel. This erosion can cause several oral health issues, including see-through teeth. Acidic food and drinks lower the pH concentration of your saliva (below 5.5), which demineralizes the enamel. Demineralization is the first step towards enamel erosion. When the enamel losses its ability to mineralize, teeth become translucent.
Note: Excess in-office or at-home bleaching of teeth can also cause the enamel to wither away and cause translucent teeth.
When you look in the mirror and notice see-through edges in your teeth, your first thought would be – This makes my smile look ugly.
While it is a cosmetic concern, translucent teeth caused by enamel loss are a concern for your overall oral health. When your teeth lose enamel, they become sensitive to hot and cold edibles and beverages. (Trust us, tooth sensitivity isn’t as simple as it seems, it makes it difficult to eat and drink normally.)
Also, without enamel, your teeth are more susceptible to damage and diseases. After all, they are without the protective outer layer that kept them safe.
If you have translucent teeth due to genetic issues that make your enamel weak or a medical condition that causes it, there is hardly any way you can fight it.
But you can wriggle your way away from translucent teeth if an acidic diet is the primary cause of your misery.
The simplest, most effective way to prevent acid-induced enamel loss and see-through teeth is to avoid the food items that cause it. (Citrus fruits, sodas, candy, and coffee, for example.)
If you cannot skip these food items altogether, brush your teeth after consuming them. You can also rinse your mouth with water (or mouthwash) after consumption. This would limit the extent of the damage.
Some other preventive measures include –
Using straws to consume acidic beverages (as and when possible).
Chewing sugar-free gum between meals to increase the production of saliva.
Drinking ample water.
Reducing sugary food and drinks that can cause tooth damage.
Regular brushing and flossing.
Timely visits to the dentist to detect problems early on.
If your enamel erodes completely, there is no way you (or anyone else) can bring it back. No homeopathic or clinical methods can restore a lost enamel.
But workarounds are available. Depending on the severity of your situation, we can help you find a way to limit the damage and address your oral health and cosmetic concerns.
If your situation gets detected in the early phase, home remedies will be enough to fix things. (That gives you one more reason to schedule a visit to the dentist soon so that conditions like see-through teeth and enamel loss are identified early on.)
The home remedies you should try include –
Limit intake of acidic food and beverages.
Drink lactose-free milk to ensure calcium intake, but limit acidity.
Consume probiotic-rich yoghurt.
Going for calcium and vitamin D supplements.
Up your daily water intake.
Using a remineralising toothpaste. It should also contain fluoride.
At Natural Smiles, we understand your concerns over see-through teeth. And we have the following solutions for the same.
Dental Bonding
A non-invasive procedure, dental bonding involves bonding composite resin to your enamel. It restores the normal look and function of your teeth. It is a quick and painless procedure that can be completed in a single sitting. And it lasts for five to seven years.
Veneers
Thin shells of porcelain or composite, called veneers, can be fixed over your teeth to act as a barrier between your enamel and outer stimuli. Veneers are custom-made and so the process takes longer to complete (at least 2 sittings). Veneers last for 10-15 years.
Dental Crowns
If your teeth have suffered significant damage due to enamel loss, dental crowns (tooth-shaped caps) can be fixed over your teeth. They also require multiple sittings and last for 10-15 years.
Don’t let enamel loss lead to a loss of confidence in you. At Natual Smiles, we are here to fix your see-through teeth in the best possible way. Schedule a consultation visit today to smile with confidence.
