Smiling is contagious, and thus, it should look beautiful. But what to do if you have misaligned teeth or gaps between the teeth? The Six Months Smile treatment can be an answer to these and various other dental issues such as extrusions, intrusions, rotations, etc.
If you opt for the treatment to get straighter teeth, your dentist will perform a procedure and ask you to wait for six months. A nickel-titanium wire, of the same color as your teeth, will cover your teeth for these six months. It will shift the position of the misaligned teeth, and give you a dazzling smile.
Firstly, let’s check if you are suitable for the treatment or not. I’ve seen people getting braces for dental issues that need other immediate treatments. Here are the conditions that would make you suitable to get the Six Months Smile procedure:
Six Months Smile focuses mainly on the teeth that show when you smile. Those are your incisors, both upper and lower. Here, let’s check the benefits of this treatment:
Unlike your original metal braces, the six months smile braces are made of a material that exerts less pressure on your teeth. Six months will go in a flash. Besides, the braces are attached to only a few teeth that need straightening, so your entire jaw won’t be caged.
Since the braces are fabricated to match the color of your teeth, they’ll be as discreet as an intelligence agent. Much better than metal shining on your teeth.
As its name suggests, the magic happens within six months. This is comparatively faster than all other orthodontic treatments available in the UK.
I can take you through the procedure of the Six Months Smile with four stages. Take a look at them:
Like everything else, you’ll have to first visit a professional dental clinic such as Natural Smiles and get a consultation. The dentist will first confirm if you need the Six Months Smile or not. If you do, then they’ll proceed further.
Once I know that the patient requires Six Months Smiles, I often advise them to get back home, think about it, and come back the next day. That’s what most dentists do. The dentist takes the impression of your teeth when you visit the next day.
You’ll have to revisit because the impression is sent to a lab where your braces are made. A special Six Months Smiles patient kit is used to create the braces. The equipment ensures that the brackets are placed appropriately and could be quickly bonded to your teeth before the wires are fixed.
In my experience, lab work usually takes 2-3 days. So, after these days, the dentist calls you for the final treatment. The dentist attaches the brace to your teeth carefully and keeps it placed there for a while. He/she might even ask you to hold it for 10-15 mins until it’s completely fixed.
The work’s done for that day. However, you might need 3-4 revisits in the first month for minor re-adjustments. Plus, your teeth also feel something new, so they start acting weirdly in the beginning. That needs a bit of adjustment. I’d suggest that you revisit your dentist at least once a week for the first month.
This stage comes after six months. Meanwhile, if you face any issues with the braces, your dentist would be available to correct it.
When the treatment is completed, the dentist will remove the braces and replace it with the retainers. That is the final step to ensure that the teeth stay in their new position.
I’m sure you already follow the brush twice a day routine. To this, I’d advise you to add one more time for at least the next two months. You’ll also have to avoid consuming processed sugar, caffeine, chewy foods, and dairy products for some time.
While the retainer is on, you can use mouthwashes or interdental brushes to clean up areas that are difficult to reach. Overall, you just have to be extra cautious for some time to ensure that the Six Months Smile procedure works and stays.
The results that you’ll see will be drastic and quite welcoming. I’ve seen clients jumping with joy when they see the results in the clinic itself. But don’t be too carefree because the treatment needs care and hygiene to sustain.
Another piece of advice, please don’t refrain from getting a retainer after the treatment. It will stop your teeth from repositioning to their natural position.
As for those who, like most of my clients, are fearing pain or discomfort during this treatment. You can stop worrying about that. It’s only in the first few weeks that you feel a bit of discomfort and an urge to remove it. But if you combat that, there’s something better in store for you.
Keep smiling!
