What Counts as a Dental Emergency and What Should You Do?
2nd July 2025
Dental problems can be unsettling at the best of times, but when pain strikes suddenly or something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to know whether you’re dealing with a true dental emergency.
Not every issue needs immediate attention, but some situations require urgent care to prevent further damage, stop infection, or relieve intense discomfort.
At Natural Smiles in Leicester, we often hear patients ask, “Is this a dental emergency or can it wait?”
This guide will help you understand what constitutes a dental emergency, the signs to watch for, and what to do if it happens to you or someone in your family.
What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation involving your teeth, gums, or mouth that needs urgent attention. It might involve severe pain, bleeding, infection, or trauma. Left untreated, these issues can worsen, lead to long-term problems, or impact your overall health.
While some dental issues can wait for a routine appointment, others should not be delayed. If you are unsure, it is always best to speak to your dentist for advice.
Common Types of Dental Emergencies
Here are the most common dental emergencies and the signs that you should contact your dentist as soon as possible:
Severe Toothache
A toothache is one of the most frequent reasons people seek emergency dental care. While some toothaches are mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, intense or persistent pain could signal a serious issue.
You may be experiencing:
- An infected tooth or dental abscess
- Advanced decay
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Gum infection
If your toothache is throbbing, wakes you at night, or is accompanied by swelling or a fever, you should seek dental advice urgently.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can occur around the tooth root or in the gum. Abscesses are usually very painful and can spread quickly if not treated. Signs include:
- A swollen face or jaw
- Severe pain that may radiate to your ear or neck
- A bad taste in the mouth
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
An untreated abscess can lead to serious complications, so prompt treatment is essential.
Knocked-Out Tooth
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out due to injury or an accident, this is an emergency. Time is critical. The sooner the tooth is reinserted, the better the chance of saving it.
What to do:
- Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root
- Rinse it gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub
- Try to place it back in the socket if you can
- If not possible, store it in a container of milk or saliva and get to your dentist immediately
Do not delay. Knocked-out teeth have the best chance of being saved if treated within an hour.
Broken, Cracked or Chipped Tooth
Damage to a tooth can range from a minor chip to a significant fracture. Not all broken teeth are emergencies, but if the crack is deep, the tooth is painful, or the nerve is exposed, you should seek urgent care.
Avoid chewing on the affected side and rinse your mouth with warm water. If you are bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze.
Lost Filling or Crown
While losing a filling or crown may not always be painful, it can expose sensitive parts of your tooth and leave it vulnerable to further damage. If the tooth feels tender, looks sharp, or is causing discomfort, it is best to see us promptly. In some cases, emergency care may be required to prevent the issue from worsening.
Bleeding Gums or Mouth Injury
Occasional gum bleeding when brushing is common, especially if you have gum disease. However, uncontrolled or spontaneous bleeding from the gums, tongue, or soft tissues of the mouth may indicate trauma or a serious underlying condition.
If bleeding is heavy, won’t stop after applying pressure for 10 minutes, or is accompanied by swelling or pain, get in touch with us for emergency dental advice.
Swelling of the Face or Jaw
Facial swelling can be caused by a dental abscess, infection, or injury. If the swelling is severe or affecting your ability to breathe, swallow, or speak, it is important to get medical help straight away. Do not wait to see if it improves on its own.
What Is Not Usually a Dental Emergency?
Some dental issues feel urgent but can often wait a day or two without risking your health. These include:
- A dull toothache that responds well to painkillers
- Minor chips that are not painful
- Loose or lost crowns that are not causing discomfort
- A broken orthodontic wire that is not poking into your cheek or gums
In these cases, call us for advice and to arrange the next available appointment.
What Should You Do in a Dental Emergency?
Knowing what to do in the moment can make a big difference. If you experience a dental emergency:
- Stay calm and assess the situation.
- Call us. At Natural Smiles, our team will talk you through what to do and aim to see you as quickly as possible.
- Follow any advice given over the phone. This might include using a cold compress, avoiding hot food, or taking suitable pain relief.
- Do not delay. Early treatment often prevents further damage or more complex procedures later.
- How to Prevent Dental Emergencies
While not all dental emergencies are avoidable, many can be prevented through good oral care and regular check-ups. Here are a few tips to reduce your risk:
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss or clean between your teeth every day
- Visit us for regular check-ups and hygienist appointments
- Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports
- Avoid using your teeth to open bottles or tear packaging
- Don’t ignore minor symptoms. Small issues can quickly become more serious
