Dental bridges can replace one or more missing teeth and there are different types depending on your needs, including:

Traditional fixed bridge – This type of bridge uses two porcelain crowns, which sit on either side of the gap as an anchor to hold the new false teeth in place.
Cantilever bridge – If there is only one tooth able to support a bridge a cantilever bridge is used. The crown will be anchored to one or more teeth on only one side of the gap.
Maryland bridge – This type of bridge is used in the replacement of front tooth gaps and when the two teeth on either side are healthy. A plastic tooth fitted to metal bands is used and banded to the back of the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.

What are bridges made of?

Bridges can be made of different materials but this usually includes porcelain, gold and metal, depending on the preference of the patient.

What does the procedure involve?

The dentist will numb the area beforehand with an anaesthetic. Once this is done they will prepare the teeth by shaving a small portion away to allow for the crown to be fitted and bridge to be made. Impressions will be made of the teeth before a personal dental crown is made. During your second appointment, your crowns and bridge will be fitted and cemented into place.

All crowns and bridges are selected to suit your smile and face perfectly, with a large range of colours available for you to choose from.

How long do bridges last?

If you maintain good oral hygiene and health you can expect your bridge to last between 10-15 years.

Crowns or caps are used when teeth are broken, damaged or fractured and cannot be treated with composite fillings. Crowns can also be used as a tooth replacement during dental implant treatment and to protect the tooth after root canal work. Crowns not only return the strength of the tooth but also its appearance.

What are dental crowns made from and how are they fitted?

Dental crowns can be made from a range of materials, from gold to metal alloy, but the majority are a mix of metal with a porcelain shell. Once it has been decided that crowns are your best option your dentist will clean the tooth, removing any decay while reshaping it with a burr to prepare it for the crown. Once this preparation is completed an impression of your tooth will be made and sent to a dental lab to create a crown, which will be bespoke and fit your tooth perfectly.

During your first visit, you will be fitted with a temporary crown until your personal crown is created, which is about 2-3 weeks after your impression has been made. When you come back for your second visit the temporary crown is removed and your tooth is treated with an etching acid, which roughens the outside of your tooth to make it an ideal texture to bond with your new crown. Your crown will then be cemented into place. All of this will be carried out under local anaesthesia.

How long does a crown last?

If you take good care of your teeth and stick to an excellent oral hygiene regime, you can expect your crown to last between 10-15 years.

I came to Natural Smiles to see Anisha. For an emergency appointment. Highly anxious and nervous. I was immediately put at ease the moment I walked through the door. Reception staff were extremely friendly. I was then greeted by Katie. Who took me through to the room and introduced me to Anisha. They both explained what was going to happen. I can't personally recommend this dental practice enough. I wish I had joined many years ago, the service is second to none! Anubha is always so professional, very reassuring and understanding when it comes to my care and treatment. Wow, what can I say I am incredibly happy with my Enlighten Smile experience!! I was actually with a different dentist based in Leicester and came over to Natural Smiles after I was pushed and pushed to buy products I did not want or even need. I was completely put off until I was recommended to go to Natural Smiles. There was no selling of all the teeth procedures under the Sun but simply asked what I was comfortable doing to perfect my smile and they had my price range in mind.I wanted to have my teeth whitened for years and with my upcoming wedding in July I knew it was time to proceed. I was treated with care and smiling faces from the receptionist to the dentist. They cared about me and gave me guidance from start to finish! I didn't visit the dentist for 17yrs due to a phobia. Although my teeth were okay I had gum disease. I decided to have Invisaligns and 4 veneers on the top set of teeth. Dr Waghela put me completely at ease through the whole process which took about a year all together. I'm over the moon with the results. My teeth look so natural.
