Dentures have been around for centuries. They are dependable, easy to wear and care for, and inexpensive replacements for missing teeth.
Though modern dentures are tough, they may break.
That is not unusual at all since the human jaw is the strongest in the human body. The bite force of a molar can be 200 lbs. That’s the strength you need to masticate nuts, dried fruits, and meat.
If a denture fails in any way, you are reduced to a diet of soft bread and omelet till it is repaired.
We share a guide about denture repair and the cost involved.
The human jaw and teeth are rather exceptional. The teeth extend deep inside the jawbone. This provides sufficient stability while chewing.
A denture is made of hard resin. The denture has two parts. The first is reddish and takes the place of the palate. It is also the anchor to which artificial teeth are anchored.
Though the entire setup works well, it is not as strong as what you were born with. With time, the denture palate might crack or the tooth might become loose and fall out.
The main reason is wear and tear. A denture is made from acrylic resin. Since it is malleable, it is the material of choice.
When you are first fitted with a denture, a cast is taken from your mouth. Based on its shape, a denture is made for you.
With time, the material might become thinner. Saliva in the mouth mixed with food materials causes the resin to grow thinner. As the cross-section peters out, the denture can snap or become misshapen.
This would lead to an uneven bite with some parts of the mouth working more than others and lead to more problems.
Repair makes the denture fit better. A broken denture can hamper not only intake of food but also speech. That is not at all desirable.
A denture that has become loose over time can rub against the gum and palate and cause irritation. The location might become reddish or swell. The trigeminal nerve runs parallel to the jawline. Any tension in the oral cavity can lead to severe pain in the ears and head.
If a tooth falls out from the denture, there is a lack of adequate pressure on the corresponding tooth from the other jaw. This can cause extrusion since our teeth balance each other and the lack of one causes the other to move out of place.
When a denture does not fit well or has broken, carry it to your dental care provider.
Do not worry that you would need new dentures. Unless the damage is serious, you would not need to pay for a fresh pair.
A denture is, after all, a prosthetic. A technician can easily repair any damage and return it in a day or two.
However, the process is technical and cannot be duplicated at home.
No matter what you do, never buy denture repair kits and try to carry out a repair at home. It is not a light bulb and requires a professional to mend properly.
Improper care would lead to a situation where your bite force is not evenly distributed. That can lead to serious medical problems later.
Besides, the glue provided in these repair kits never has the strength required. In the end, you would have to pay to get a brand new set. The risk is simply not worth it.
Unlike a kit, a technician does not use commonly available industrial glue to put a broken denture back together.
If they did, the repair would barely last a few days.
At a dental clinic, repair of a more permanent nature is carried out.
Usually, wax is used to put the broken pieces back together. This is not meant as a permanent solution, but to find if the prosthetic fit properly.
If the damage is grave, then a fresh pair has to be made.
However, if the wax-embedded denture works properly, the silicone is used to put the pieces back permanently.
When the work is complete, the dentures would be as good as new and the damage is barely visible. The excess material is removed, and the denture is good for reuse.
Normally, a denture lasts a few years. Because of changes in the human jaw as we age, a fresh set of dentures is needed every 10 years.
A repair does not mean the life of a denture is reduced. If you have used it for a couple of years, there is no reason why, after mending, it cannot last several more.
There is no cause to be worried.
Denture repair is highly affordable.
There are procedures in dentistry that cost a lot of money, e.g. dental implants. But a denture is affordable and repair is even more so.
Carry in your broken denture at the local dental clinic and get it mended immediately. On average, it would set you back by £100-180.
At Natural Smiles, we offer you the best possible dental care at the lowest price. The work we do is top-notch.
All that our team of expert professionals cares for is your well-being.
Denture Relining
This is a different procedure. If the dentures you have been wearing have become wobbly, you might be asked to go for relining.
There are various relining options available and the cost varies between £90-140 depending on the type of repair and the place where you have it done. Of course, some clinics have greater overhead and this reflects on the price.
If your dentures are giving you trouble, don’t wait. Why should you suffer when, for a few pounds, the problem can be rectified?
It does not take a lot of time. You would be able to chew perfectly and enjoy a happy and healthy life.
